About
What is Local Dish?
Local Dish is your one-stop online destination for information about local food, dishing up the dirt on farmers markets, CSAs, seasonal produce, ranchers, dairies, food gardens, events, resources and anything else we can dig up about eating in your region, your state, your neighborhood.
The goal is to make the often intimidating task of shifting your eating habits simple and fun. Simple, because all the necessary information is in one place. Fun, because Local Dish isn't focused on heavy subjects like politics, environmentalism and social responsibility — though those are certainly motivations behind local eating, to each his own. Local Dish is about the adventure. The people. The variety. The absolutely fabulous and delicious food available and how to prepare it for your family.
How does this work?
The Web site has three major functions, the first of which is a database of local food producers. While it's still growing and is far from complete, if it ever can be, this catalogs local farmers markets, farmers, ranchers, dairies, grocery store products, community resources and more. We hope to connect you with what you want to eat as well as show you the faces of food in our community, providing a back story for the meal on your table.
The second part of Local Dish is our blog, where Kate offers original content and photography about our personal food adventures and other items of interest to budding localvores: information on various products, kitchen tips and tricks, recipe advice, interviews with important or interesting people in food, spotlights on producers, contests and giveaways, news, guest bloggers and more.
Lastly, what's the good of finding great food if you don't know what to do with it? For that reason, we're building a recipe database focused on local eating, collecting ways to prepare often unusual items seen at the farmers markets. Beets, kohlrabi, fresh herbs, bok choi.... Users can comment on these recipes, and as we upgrade, add their own to the collection, as well.
Is this how you really eat?
Well, yes.
Once the Web site gets up to speed, Kate truly intends to show you how to use every scrap of weekly produce, document every meal that crosses her table (success or failure) and share all of her favorite recipes with you in the database. It will take time and patience to build, but we truly hope to become the first stop of home cooks everywhere who want to attempt the farm-to-table lifestyle but have no idea where to begin. Let us make the mistakes and take the chances for you. Let us share our adventure with you, so you in turn can brighten your table and improve your diet with lots of fresh and fantastic ingredients.
